September 22, 2016

Council Executive Director Dixie Anderson will be honored by the Foreign Policy Association in New York City as she is presented with the Foreign Policy Association Medal.

About the Foreign Policy Association Medal: It recognizes individuals who demonstrate responsible internationalism and work to expand public knowledge of international affairs. Past recipients include the Honorable Michael Bloomberg, Mayor, New York City; Timothy Geithner, Chairman, Federal Reserve Bank of New York; Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the European Central Bank; Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister, Australia; Sheila C. Bair, Chairman, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Anne-Marie Slaughter, Dean, Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, among others.

Dixie has been the leader of our Council and in the Western Michigan community for over twenty years. She also served as Vice Chair of the World Affairs Councils of America Board system. She is the reason that our Council and its programming has the high reputation that it does and it is gratifying to see her work to promote global education highlighted. Dixie will accept the award at the Foreign Policy Association in New York City on October 27.Check out the MLive article on this outstanding honor here.

Some thoughts from Dixie on receiving this award:

I am getting the award from the FPA because of my work in global education for over 20 years. The Foreign Policy Association's "Great Decisions Global Discus

Our lecture/discussion series (we vary the format: some lecture; some panel discussions; some multi-media presentations) is the largest Great Decisions Lecture Series in the United States. It is always eight of the most critical foreign policy issues of the year that the United States is facing.

11 local universities and colleges use the series as a credit course in various departments (typically political science or international business). Our members and the general public also attend the Monday evening events or the daytime interactive webcasts. We literally reach several thousand people each year with the series.

It is humbling to receive this award because this award represents the executive directors that have preceded me and past and present board members of the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan that have worked so very hard since 1949 to bring a global perspective to this community. I stand on all their shoulders.
