April 25, 2018

The World Affairs Council of Western Michigan (WACWM) will be hosting Canada’s Deputy Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman, along with representatives from the Consular Corps of Michigan, at WACWM’s annual Consular Luncheon on Tuesday, May 8, at 12 noon at the University Club in downtown Grand Rapids.

Her luncheon keynote address is titled “A Renewed NAFTA: The Key to an Enduring North American Prosperity."

Prior to joining the Canadian Embassy staff in 2017, Ms. Hillman, a practicing attorney, held the position of Assistant Deputy Minister of the Trade Agreements and Negotiations Branch at Global Affairs Canada, overseeing Canada’s trade policy and negotiations. She was also Canada’s chief negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

In addition, she managed Canada’s international investor-state arbitration under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Ms. Hillman holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba and a Bachelor of Civil Law and a Bachelor of Common Law from McGill University.

Also attending the Consular Luncheon will be representatives from 12 countries: Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Grenada, Jordan, Lithuania, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland and Yemen.

The Consular Luncheon is an annual WACWM contribution to the World Trade Week activities sponsored by the Van Andel Global Trade Center at Grand Valley State University and the U.S. Commercial Service, a department of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. www.gvsu.edu.wtw
